Our enhanced pathway allows studying students to make the most of CIOB membership. Enhanced pathway has all the benefits of our basic pathway with some added benefits, for example, access to industry-specific CPD content (Knowledge Academy) and a subscription to Construction Management magazine (UK and Ireland only). Qualified and Experienced Practitioner - N/SVQ Pathway

This pathway was created to streamline the process for members who are ready to achieve Chartered membership. You will need an SVQ L5 (SCQF L11) / NVQ 7 and 3 years of construction management experience to begin this pathway and your NVQ assessor is MCIOB or FCIOB. You can then progress directly to your Chartered membership assessment (Professional Review) and be Chartered in three months.

If you are eligible this pathway to become chartered can be completed in three months.

Do you have an NVQ7 (or equivalent qualification)? If you also have three years of professional construction management experience then, our Qualified & Experienced Practitioner Pathway may be ideal for helping you reach Chartered Membership, with tailored support from the CIOB.

This pathway was created to streamline the process for members who are ready to achieve Chartered Membership. You could progress through this pathway and be Chartered in three months. To be ready for Chartership, we have some minimum requirements to ensure applicants have the skills and experience needed to pass. For this pathway, members need a degree-level qualification and three years (for a construction-related degree) or five years (for a non-construction-related degree) of construction management experience. You can then progress directly to your Chartered membership assessment/exam (Professional Review).

We know that many Educators are keen to become Chartered, so we have a pathway designed to help academics in construction research or teaching (at Level 4 or above). Becoming a Chartered Member of the CIOB reinforces your industry connections. Our Educator Pathway may be for you if you have a Bachelor's Degree, Master's or Doctorate (or equivalent), and over five years' experience researching or teaching a construction-related subject. This pathway offers a 50% discount for educators and you could be Chartered in three months.

Joining the industry without a construction-related degree can sometimes leave you without some of the context and knowledge to speed up your progression. So, we have designed a pathway to help you take your next step up. To give you industry-specific knowledge sooner, this pathway includes a course called a Graduate Conversion Certificate (GCC). This pathway will shorten your journey so you can be Chartered in three years.

Knowledge Development Pathway (GCC)

Pathway Requirements

Graduate Conversion Certificate (GCC) is a training course with one-on-one support and training. Training providers can deliver this training course in various ways to suit your lifestyle, including e-learning, block release, evening classes, or workplace learning.
Typically following this pathway it will take 4 years to reach chartership.

What will you learn?

The GCC's modules build up your industry-specific knowledge and fill in any gaps from not having done a construction-related Degree.

Recommended modules are:
- Project Planning for Construction
- Managing the Quality of Construction Works
- Managing Health, Safety, Welfare and Risk in Construction Works
- Contractual and Legal Responsibilities within a Construction Environment
- Managing the Technology of Modern and Traditional Construction Works.

Skills Development Pathway (PDP)

If you have a Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) and less than three years of management experience, then this Pathway may be for you.

Fellowship Pathway

Our direct-to fellowship pathway is designed to quickly support industry leaders to become prestigious Chartered Fellows of the CIOB. This pathway is for those who have been leading an organisation or people and contributing to the industry, communities or society for at least five years. There is no minimum age requirement. You can complete this Pathway and graduate as a Chartered Fellow in three months. You will be directed to the CIOB.org website for instructions on pursuing this pathway.

It is required that you possess at least 5 years of experience leading an organisation, people and contributing to the industry, communities or society. Candidates must also have responsibilities that extend to working with sector stakeholders. This work must demonstrate a contribution to the wider industry or the general public and could be through industry-specific charities such as the Construction Youth Trust or the CIOB or other stakeholders such as schools, universities, communities and community groups or government agencies.

Fellowship is independently benchmarked at Level 7 which is comparable to a British Master’s Degree. This work has been carried out by the expert qualifications agency, UK ENIC which provides information on qualifications to governments and government authorities and education establishments across the world.

Technical Specialist (TechCIOB) Pathway

We understand that technical specialists may find it difficult to gain recognition for their competence and experience. So we now offer a reliable assessment method through our Technical Member grade (TechCIOB). We empower specialists to promote their achievements via a globally recognised certification and post-nominals. In addition, Technical Members (TechCIOB) gain access to CIOB's many benefits, including CPD, networking etc.

Our Technical Member grade (TechCIOB) may be for you if you have a level 4 (for example, NVQ4, BTEC) qualification and three years of experience working in a technical role / A level 3 qualification and five years of experience working in a technical role.
